Private Carlisle Hodgson

 

Carlisle Hodgson was born on 23 July 1879 at Barton, Westmorland, England, the third or fourth of ten childern of domestic coachman Thompson Hodgson and his wife Julianna (née Carlisle). At the time of the 1901 Census he was living at Knockeevan House, Lisronagh, County Tipperary with two of his brothers, Carlisle working as a groom and domestic servant. His parents and five other siblings were at Kilshane, Tipperary, his father employed as a coachman.

In the following years they returned to England. In 1907 Carlisle was living at Terrington, Yorkshire, and working as a groom. On 26 January that year he married Sarah Jane Brown in the Ripley Parish Church, Derby. At the time of the 1911 Census they were living at Malton Road Cottages, Claxton, Yorkshire, with their two children, Carlisle working as a domestic coachman.

Hodgson enlisted in the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons Service Squadron between 10 and 20 November 1914 (No. UD/165 – later Corps of Dragoons No.21249).

Little more is known about his military service, other than the following.

He embarked for overseas service between 1916 and 1918. At some point he was attached to the 2nd Dragoons, before being transferred to the King's Own Scottish Borderers (No.40951) – possibly posted to one of the battalions based in Ireland at the time.

On 24 May 1919 Hodgson was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.

At the time of the 1939 Register he and his wife were living at East Langton, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, where he worked as a stud groom for hunters and brood mares. He died in Whitechurch, Shropshire, on 28 October 1958.
